Jimmy Dale and I started first grade together and spent the next 12 years together in Freedom school. We moved buildings once, but only because a new school was built between 5th and 6th grade. We were occasionally in trouble but usually just mischeif, not criminal behavior. One Halloween we borrowed our father's pickups (many of us) and spent the night hauling stuff from the dump and throwing it out of the back of the pickup onto Main Street. By the end of the evening we had pretty much blocked all two blocks of Main. The good part was we got out of school the next day to clean up the mess!
Jimmy Dale had another memorable experience on Main Street that I recall. He had this Pontiac Grand Prix, huge engine and a 4 speed, the thing was half a block long. Jimmy Dale decided to burn a donut in the middle of Main. Unfortunately he lost control and ran headon into a light pole.
Jimmy Dale loved fast cars and motorcycles, sometimes with disasterous results. He bought a new 1968 Chevy Malibu SS, 327 with a 4 speed. He was showing it off to friends and let one of them drive it from Mooreland to Freedom. I wasn't there, but I'm pretty sure alcohol was involved. Anyway the friend who shall remain nameless lost control on a straight section of highway and rolled the car, totaling it.
Jim and I went to college together at Alva. We had a little too much fun and Jim ended up dropping out. We kind of lost count of how many times he told teachers his poor grandmother died that first year. I transferred to OSU my junior year after the local traffic judge told me he was going to sentence me to 10 days in jail if he saw me before him one more time. I may be slow, but I'm trainable. I started the transfer process the next week.
I saw Jim occasionally over the years until he moved to Arkansas. We reconnected several years ago when he called me out of the blue looking for a mutual friend from our college days contact info. We exchanged Christmas cards, and last year when our class celebrated our 50th high school reunion I invited him and the rest of the class up to my ranch for lunch. We were sad that Jim didn't make it.
Jimmy Dale was a kind and gererous soul. I will miss him.
