Obituary for Larry Eugene Henson

Larry E. Henson, 73, of Choctaw, AR, passed away April 10, 2020 in the comfort of his home with his coveted television remote in his hand. He was born to Edith and Herman Henson, in San Angelo, TX, on September 9, 1946. He was often referred to as their “child of color”. Unfortunately, we were unable to arrange a viewing for family and friends to pay their respects. As the funeral home would not agree to our fathers’ wishes of being “Propped up by the juke box with a beer in his hand”. However, we will hold a memorial service later for all to attend and be present for the spreading of his ashes on Greers Ferry Lake. The only thing he loved more than his children and grandchildren was sitting at Choctaw Park and watching the fish swim by. He often joked about having his ashes spread over Greers Ferry Lake so he could be fish food and it would be a nice change from them stealing his favorite lures.
Larry was a Navy veteran and a lifelong member of the local VFW Post 4764. He had his very own stool at that wooden bar next to Cecil. The two things other than fishing he was passionate about was the VFW and keeping public access to the Johnson Hole. When he would jump on his soap box about the Johnson Hole, you just grabbed one of his beer from his cooler and listened.
Larry is survived by his children, Delina (Ricky Cassell), Dakota Henson, Monica (William Hunt), his grandchildren Kaitlin (Neil Branigan), Taylor Gray, Kaylee Cassell, and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Branigan. His siblings Wanda Maulden, Harvey Henson, and Donna Henson, a host of nephews, nieces, friends, and last but not least, his brother from another mother, ride or die (and almost did a time or two), accomplice, brig mate, Leo McDonald. Our dad’s other half (well his ¼ due to Uncle Leo’s short stature)! They were best friends and brother in laws since they were 18. Meeting on that naval ship, young, dumb, and ugly for the first time and knowing at first sight, they would be pulling the craziest of adventures and trips to jail together for life!
Larry was welcomed home by his parents, Herman and Edith, his brothers, Clyde, Ray, and Marvin, and a daughter, Carla. Quite positive Carla demanded to be at the front of the line to see if he brought her some of his famous fried fish!

We request from each of you to think of our dad each time you go out on Greers Ferry Lake and don’t catch anything, because he caught the only good fish out there…13lbs 8oz Large Mouth Bass, just in case you forgot. When you take that first scorching hot bite of fried fish and burn your entire mouth, because you were too dumb to let it cool. When you see one of those old John Wayne movies playing, wishing with todays’ technology, they would add color. When you hear a Hank Williams’ song, Sr, or Jr, either are the only acceptable country musicians other than Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. When you laugh for absolutely no reason, know Larry just made some kind of a wisecrack, and think of him!
