Sherry Lee Lewis (née Goettsch) of Edgemont, Arkansas, left our world for the great library in the sky on April 8th, 2023, at home, surrounded by books, and with her mom at her side. She was born on July 4th, 1953, to Arthur and Carolyn Goettsch (neither of which were a hamster, nor smelt of elderberries) in Marshalltown, Iowa. She graduated from Sigourney High School before moving to Arkansas in the 70s. She loved books and spent most of her time at home reading, mainly mysteries. She also had a great love for music, and would start singing a song any time something reminded her of a lyric…especially James Taylor. I think she would have married him instead, but then she wouldn’t have us kids, so how good could that have been anyway? Although quite humble about it, she was loved by just about everyone that met her – she was full of humor and plenty of witty remarks which drew people in and kept them laughing. Everyone knew of her love for flamingos, and she had, quite literally, flamingo-everything. She worked as a receptionist for Dr. Lee Vaughn in Heber Springs, Arkansas, and loved so many of her patients as much as they loved her. She worked there for 18 years, 5 months, and 18 days – she always kept count and could rattle it off to the hour when asked. We do wish Doc the best of luck in finding his lost charts now.
Most of all, she loved her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids fiercely. She always said “I don’t know nothin’ ‘bout birthin’ babies,” but she had a couple anyway. Left with countless memories are her kids, Jesse Ferguson and his wife, Alicia, of Cedarville, Arkansas; Michelle Holliman (née Lewis) and her husband, Scott, of Searcy, Arkansas; grandkids, Emery, Emely, Ezrah, Rylee, Levi, and Hannah; great-grandkids Andyn, Elias, and one more that will be blessing us soon (white out this area to write their name in later); her mother, Carolyn Goettsch, of Edgemont; her brother, Boyd Goettsch, of Winslow, Arkansas; and so many more family and friends.
Mom never liked a lot of attention and fanfare and did not want a funeral or any type of service, so the family will be honoring her wishes. She’d probably be annoyed that I even wrote this much about her anyway, but what’s she gonna do about it? But don’t panic! Instead, she will be celebrated every single day through the lives of her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and everyone who was blessed to know her. Any time you see flamingo, give it a wave (hand above the crown) because that will be her version of pennies from heaven to us all. You might look a little crazy waving at birds and inanimate objects, but you’re channeling your inner Sherry – she didn’t care what anyone thought and neither should you.
So long, and thanks for all the fish
