Obituary for William Leon "Bill" Young

William Leon "Bill" Young
Bill Young, of Batesville, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at White River Medical Center on Monday, September 22, 2014, surrounded by family. Born in Stuttgart, Arkansas, Bill made his home in a number of towns across his beloved Arkansas. In 2010, Bill married Sandy, the love of his life, and moved to Batesville. The two spent their time enjoying their children, grandchildren, and their shared love of travel, cats, and reading.
After graduating from DeWitt High School in 1959, Bill entered the U.S. Navy, where he served as an electrician aboard the famed nuclear submarine, the USS Swordfish. In 1964, he left the Navy to continue what would be a lifetime of selfless devotion to the service of country and state. After his discharge, Bill employed his love for the written word, first as a newspaper journalist, and eventually as an editor.
In 1973, Bill began what would become a distinguished career as an Arkansas State Trooper, retiring in 2000 as a highly decorated captain. Of the many highlights in his law enforcement career, Bill was most proud of his work on the State Trooper Memorial, the development of the state's concealed carry firearm policy, and being honored as the Trooper of the Year in 1994.
Bill is survived by his wife, Sandy, of Batesville, children Tara Ralston, Tonya Eddy (Alan), Britt Davison, Derick Jenkins (Sharon), Amanda Cothren (Russell), Josh Jenkins (Katie), Laura Jean Caldwell (Justin), and seventeen grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He is also survived by one sister, Judy Byers, and one brother Bob Young. He was preceded in death by his parents Darrell and Laron Young of DeWitt, Arkansas.
Bill had a passion for all living creatures. The family suggests Independence County Humane Society for donations to honor his memory.
