Karen Ann Coats Dunham, age 64 of Scotland, went home to be with the Lord on December 4th. She was born on October 22, 1956 in Garberville, California to Maude “Virginia” Mahan and James “Nick” Virgil Coats, Sr. She married the love of her life, Walter “Buck” Curtis Dunham, on August 8, 1973 in California. They enjoyed 47 years of marriage.


Karen, also known as Nanny and Big Belly, spent many years running her own beauty salon after she completed cosmetology school. During this time, she also managed a farm and followed the school bus to many basketball games watching her girls while keeping the books and chewing on the refs. For the last 13 years, she enjoyed Buck being home from offshore where they finally got to spend all their days and nights together. In this time, they worked alongside each other running their own business, Dunham’s Gas and Grocery.


When not working, she enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family. She was known for her cooking and enjoyed teaching her grandkids to bake. She loved a good card game with family and friends and accused anyone that beat her of cheating.


Left to cherish her memory are her husband Walter “Buck” Dunham; daughters Shellie Lowder (Steven), Becky Haines (Bill), April Hagans (Jay); 2 brothers James “Jimmy” Coats and Robert Coats; and a host of grandkids that she adored! As noted in the social media posts since her passing, she has a wealth of friends, nieces and nephews that will also cherish her memory.


She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Russell Coats, Tommy Coats and Kathy Beck.

Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. with services following at 2:00 p.m.. Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the Scotland Lighthouse Church with Brother Donnie Love and Sister Sheila Gardner officiating. Burial will follow at Foster Cemetery in Scotland.
