I met Happy Jack a long time ago, and just last week felt the need to look him up. One night when Jim K. went out of the car on some business (1963), Jack and I talked. I'd always found him easy to talk to. I asked him what he was getting out of 'this life.' He said that he hadn't felt he could leave it (safely) He indicated he didn't see much of his family, I thought maybe even in the holidays of 1963/4 he may have lost them, but didn't want to press him, maybe he just didn't see them much of the time. I think really that Jack was unhappy but still didn't really want to leave. When I said to him, "What is a life worth when you lose what means the most to you?" He just looked at me, thoughtful, and said nothing. I have been thinking about him for well over a week, and even ordered his book out of the blue. Jack always had a light over him even in his darkest hours.
Bless you Jack, let no man sit in judgement of you. You redemmed your life a thousand times over. You have a beautiful soul that shone thru and lifted others for more time than you spent in darkness. The world was better for your life and darker with you absence.
